Local councillors express disappointment with lack of progress on dog fouling

Local elected representatives have today expressed their disappointment with the fact that no fines were issued in the North West last year for dog fouling.

The NCBI confirmed that the Local Authorities in Sligo Leitrim and Donegal were among 18 across the country that issued no fines for the offence.

Nationally just 82 fines were handed out in 2022.

Sligo Strandhill Councillor Tom MacSharry says has raised issued in the past at council level.

He say’s it’s a national issued and says he’s disappointed but not surprised by today’s findings.

A number of years ago the local Authority launched a scheme where samples of dog fouling would be sent to the US for testing in order to help secure prosecutions for such cases.

However just as in Sligo and Donegal no fines were issued last year.

Cllr Sean Mc Dermott says Dog Fouling could also lead to health issues for environmental staff and for those that use the various Green and Blue ways that are situated in the county

Councillors MacSharry and McDermott has been speaking to OceanFM news.
