Pay-by-weight system just two weeks away

The new pay-by weight system will come into effect for all housholders in the north west in exactly two weeks on the first of July.

The idea of it is similar to that of the water charges – it aims to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and ultimately reduce costs for people.

It will involve a flat rate charge and fee per kilo.

Drumcliffe resident Danny McHugh’s wife has MS and therefore they have a lot of heavy waste due to the requirements of her condition.

He fears his bills will double based on what he has read but he remains in the dark from his provider Barna waste as to how exactly this will work:

A spokesperson for Barna Waste told Ocean FM this week they were not in a position to comment or give further information on the fees this week.

However, this new system is already in place in county Leitrim where there has been huge controversy about its introduction over the last two years.

The County Council there was one of the first to introduce the system and they had to delay its roll out a number of times due to concerns in rural areas.

This week the issue was also raised in Donegal County Council where they called for its roll out to be postponed.

Independent Councillor Niamh Kennedy told Ocean FM News says the Local Authority is not even equipt to deal with the phasing out of the bags:

Drumcliffe resident Danny McHugh says despite a lot of talk about the new charges no one, even the waste companies, seem to know the details:
