Sligo connections in Grand National



There are a number of Sligo connections in the Grand national which is taking place today in Aintree, Liverpool.

Todays race features Sligo native Jockey, Derrick Fox, riding “One For Arthur”.

The first Irish winner of the Grand National was in the 1847 race, the winner was “Matthew” who was bred in Sligo.

In 1949 the race was won by “Russian Hero” ridden by Sligo born Leo McMorrow, and most recently, the 2005 winner “Hedgehunter” was bred by Collooney woman, Mary Lang.

The main event kicks off at 5:15pm today.
