Holders Summerhill knocked out of Connacht Colleges championship

Summerhill College’s hold on the Connacht Colleges senior ‘A’ football championship title came to an end on Friday night in a 1-9 to 0-9 provincial semi-final loss to St Gerald’s Castlebar at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence.

The damage for Summerhill was done in an error-strewn first-half as the College struggled against a strong wind against a well-organised St Gerald’s side who, backboned by their Castlebar Mitchels club contingent, established a 0-7 to 0-0 interval lead.

However, the second-half was a different affair as Summerhill, who reached the All-Ireland Hogan Cup final in 2023, came right back into proceedings and chipped away at the Castlebar lead.

They scored nine second-half points, six of them coming from the impressive Conor Flynn.

But the concession of a goal in the second half-hour would ultimately prove to the be the difference between the teams.

St Gerald’s now face last year’s beaten provincial finalists Claregalway in the Connacht final.

Connacht Colleges senior ‘A’ semi-final results
St Gerald’s (Castlebar) 1-9 Summerhill College (Sligo) 0-9
Claregalway 0-13 Rice College (Westport) 1-6
