North Leitrim Athletic Club’s Luke Fitzmaurice won a bronze medal at last weekend’s 123.ie National U20 Indoor Athletics Championships in Athlone.
He finished third in an eventful 3000 metres race walk on Saturday.
Tuam AC’s Matthew Newell was the race winner in 12 mins 55.34 secs, with Mullingar’s Andrew Glennon crossing the line second, and Fitzmaurice third 14.24.96.
However, Glennan was subsequently disqualified, which briefly promoted Fitzmaurice to the silver medal position.
But Fitzmaurice then received a 30-second penalty postrace which dropped him back down to third, 0-3 of a second behind Evan Walsh of St Joseph’s, who was eventually promoted to second place.
