Leitrim Councillor airs major concerns over the ability of prison service to cope with current challenges



A Leitrim Councillor has expressed his concern over how the Prison System in this country will cope with an increasing population and a backlog of court cases.

 

Cllr Felim Gurn made the comments after being part of a Leitrim county delegation to visit Castlerea Prison this week .

 

The current bed capacity at the Roscommon facility is 340 and there currently 369 inmates are currently being accommodated at Castlerea prison.

 

Despite plans being announced for capital projects at Castlerea, Cloverhill, Midlands and Mountjoy Prisons where it’s expected that 620 additional spaces will come on stream.
