Muireann Devaney returns to Sligo Rovers

Leitrim’s Muireann Devaney has rejoined Sligo Rovers for the 2024 SSE Airtricity Premier Division season.

The 20-year-old returns to the Showgrounds after spending three seasons at Athlone Town where she won an FAI Cup winners medal in 2023 after a penalty shoot-out win over Shelbourne in November.

Devaney previously played for the club’s under-17 side in 2019 and 2020.

She was named Rovers’ women’s Under 17 player of the year in 2020.

Speaking to Ocean FM Sport on Saturday Devaney said: “I had three great years with Athlone but I always wanted to come back to Sligo at some stage – and obviously this season was the right one to do it.”

Listen to Dónal Ryan’s interview with Muireann and Rovers head coach Tommy Hewitt here.

Hewitt previously managed Muireann at Athlone Town.

Devaney, who’s also a talented gaelic footballer with Glencar/Manorhamilton and Leitrim, links up again with new Sligo Rovers women’s boss Tommy Hewitt.

The two worked together at Athlone during the first two seasons of Devaney’s time in the midlands.

As well as winning an FAI Cup during Athlone spell, Devaney’s performances saw  her named in the LOI Team of the Season in 2022,

It’s not clear yet what impact this new deal will affect her GAA commitments during the season ahead.

Muireann won’t be the only Devaney on the Sligo Rovers books this season – as her cousin Grace recently joined the Rovers under-19 academy side for the 2024 season.
