Calls for proper resourcing of Garda roads-policing units in North West



There are renewed fears that a lack of proper resourcing of Garda roads policing units will lead to more collisions and fatalities in the North West and elsewhere.

 

There was a major Garda clampdown over the Bank Holiday weekend, which resulted in a number of arrests locally for speeding drink and drug driving offences.

 

Sligo Leitrim TD and Sinn Feins Transport Spokesperson Martin Kenny says the high number of detections is proof that when the resources are put in place, those who don’t obey the rules the road will be dealt with.

 

However, Deputy Kenny feels that this should be the form but sadly, the number of Gardaí assigned to police and monitor the roads are only a fraction of what they once were:
