Chris O’Donnell added to individual 400m startlist in Budapest

Sligo athlete Chris O’Donnell has received a place in the men’s individual 400 metres at this month’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

O’Donnell, who won a fifth national senior 400m titles in six years at last weekend’s National Track & Field Championships in Santry, was already on the Ireland team as a member of the 4 x 400 metres mixed relay quartet.

Confirmation of his addition to the men’s individual 400 metres field came through on Sunday morning.

It will be O’Donnell’s second World Championships,  having reached the 400m semi-finals in Oregon 12 months ago.

Distance athlete Nick Griggs and heptathlete Kate O’Connor have also been added to what will be Ireland’s biggest ever team for a World Championships.

However, there was disappointment for 400m hurdler Thomas Barr, who’s been forced to withdraw from the team after getting injured in training this week

The 2023 World Athletic Championships begin on August 19th, and will be broadcast live on Irish terrestrial television by Virgin Media.
