Water safety forum meeting to discuss ways of avoiding tragedy on Sligo’s beaches

Water safety forum meetings are taking place in Sligo today in the aftermath of a number of potentially serious events in Strandhill recently where swimmers had to be rescued from the water.

Earlier this week the July meeting of Sligo County Council heard calls on the local Authority to review the decision not to have lifeguards on duty on certain beaches throughout the County.

The motion tabled by Sligo Strandhill Councillor Sinead Maguire also called for an updated legal opinion on the issue to prevent future loss of life.

Speaking to Ocean FM news ahead of today’s meeting of the water safety forum Councillor Maguire says it’s unfair that the safety of the general public is left in the hands of local residents in Strandhill and local surf school operators.

Ahead of today’s meeting of the water safety forum Cllr Maguire says that there is a genuine appetite in Strandhill for whatever measures to be taken that will save lives.

The Fine Gael Councillor says that today’s meeting will look at the issue of water safety at a number of locations throughout the County of Sligo.
