HSE budget overruns reported

The HSE is back in the spotlight over budget overruns.

A Cabinet briefing by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly indicates his budget is already in trouble for the first three months of the year.

Demands on hospital services are being blamed for the pressures already affecting Minister Donnelley’s healthcare budget for 2023 – with growing concerns of a two-billion euro shortfall.

The Mail on Sunday is reporting those concerns have culminated in the resignation of HSE board member Brendan Lenihan – whose financial advisories apparently fell on deaf ears as far back as last Autumn, when the HSE was finalising its spending plans for the year ahead.

It’s understood it’s one of a number of resignations from the HSE Audit and Risk Committee amid concerns over the financial shortfall – and a lack of transparency about spending.
