Revealed: Big increase in number of dual Irish citizens in North West



There’s been a significant increase in the number of dual Irish citizens across Sligo Leitrim and Donegal.

Census figures have also revealed that there’s been a slight drop in those who stated that their health was good or very good across all three counties.

The data shows that of Sligo’s population, there were 97 males for every 100 females.

The average age of Sligo’s population in April 2022 was 40.7 years, compared with 39.2 years in April 2016.

The number of people aged 65 and over continues to grow. This age group increased by 21% to 12,903 in Sligo.

The number of dual Irish citizens in the county increased from 1,235 to 1,993 while non-Irish citizens accounted for 9% of the county’s population.

In terms of employment, there were 30,360 people at work in Sligo, an increase of 4,358 people between 2016 and 2022 – an increase of 17%.

In 2022, 83% of people in Sligo stated that their health was good or very good compared with 86% in 2016.

There similar trends in Leitrim with 99 males for every 100 females.

The average age of Leitrim’s population in April 2022 was 40.7 years, compared with 39.8 years in April 2016.

The number of dual Irish citizens in Leitrim increased from 603 to 1,146 while non-Irish citizens accounted for 10% of the county’s population.

While 83% of people in Leitrim stated that their health was good or very good compared with 86% in 2016.

There was a 16% increase in those in employment in Leitrim since the last census.

To Donegal now where there were 98 males for every 100 females.

The average age of Donegal’s population in April 2022 was 40.1 years, compared with 38.5 years in April 2016. Nationally

The number of dual Irish citizens in Donegal increased from 2,405 to 4,307 while non-Irish citizens accounted for 7% of the county’s population.

83% of people in Donegal stated that their health was good or very good compared with 86% in 2016 while there was also a 16% in those in employment since the last census.
