Local TD calls for Western Rail Corridor to open

A Sligo Leitrim TD has said the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor would be of huge economic benefit to the North West.

Sinn Fein TD Martin Kenny said that opening the line would address the issue of regional imbalance, as it would link every population centre in the west to the rest of the country.

Speaking on the matter in the Dáil, Deputy Kenny called for a commitment from the government to reopen the Western Rail Corridor, as well as existing rail lines, such as the Collooney to Claremorris line, to be used for public transport only.

In response, Minister Joe O’Brien, who was speaking on behalf of Transport Minister Eamon Ryan, gave an update on the All Island Rail Review, with a view to the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor.
