Three Sligo golfers reach West matchplay stages



Three golfers from two Sligo clubs have made it to the matchplay stages of the 2023 Connolly’s Audi Centenary West of Ireland Championship.

Co Sligo Golf Club duo Ruairi O’Connor and Barry Anderson (a winner in 2017) produced battling third rounds to both finish on nine-over-par for the championship.

Enniscrone’s David Shiel is also through after birding the 18th to finish on +7.

He will face fellow Sligoman Anderson in Monday’s round of the last 16 at 8:25am.

 

There will also be strong Donegal interest in the matchplay with Letterkenny’s Cian Harkin also reaching the knockout stages on +9 after a third round of 80.

The leading qualifier after Sunday’s play was England’s James Claridge, who will receive the inaugural Pat Ruddy Cup for top finisher at the end of the strokeplay.

The 20-year-old finished on +3 after a third round of 73.

A play-off was needed on Sunday evening to determine the final two qualifiers.

Four players finished on +10, and of those former winner Joe Lyons and Shane McDermott (Slieve Russell) came through the play-off to take their place in Monday morning’s matchplay.

Monday’s last 16 matches begin at 7.15am, with the quarter-finals scheduled for the afternoon.
