Sligo-Leitrim TD calls for uninsured drivers to be taken off roads



A Sligo-Leitrim TD says there is a serious problem when it comes to uninsured drivers in this country.

Deputy Martin Kenny says anyone unfortunate enough to have altercation with an uninsured driver often face costly repair bills with the uninsured injured drivers receiving only injury cover.

Calls have been made by the motor insurance industry for Gardaí to be given more resources to better enforce laws around uninsured drivers.

Nearly 188,000 private vehicles on the road last year were not insured – or roughly one in every 12.

It’s up from over 174 thousand in 2021.
