Gardaí announce road safety day of action ahead of bank holiday weekend

A road safety day of action begins today across Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal, as Gardaí urge road users to stay safe this bank holiday weekend.

18 people died on the roads in January of this year, the highest total in a decade.

Driving under the influence, speeding, mobile phone use and non-wearing of seatbelts will be among the main offences gardaí will be looking out for over the course of the weekend.

The operation will consist of high visibility rolling checkpoints and patrols from 9am to 9pm, led by Roads Policing Units based at Carrick On Shannon, Sligo, Donegal Town, Letterkenny and Buncrana Garda Stations.
