Leitrim make bright league start with big Derry win

Leitrim women’s gaelic footballers made an impressive start to their Lidl national league division 4 campaign on Sunday with a 5-15 to 1-2 victory over Derry in Aughawillan (pictured).

The home side were missing a number of familiar faces including, Muireann Devaney, Clare Owens, Ailish Cornyn, Aine Tighe and Mary Alice Maguire – but they made light work of their opponents here.

The county board had confirmed, earlier in the day, the appointment of Michelle Guckian as senior team captain for the 2023 season.

Despite conceding an early goal, Jonny Garrity’s took control of this game racing to a 3-8 to 1-0 interval lead.

Two more goals followed in the second-half to leave the manager with few complaints after the final whistle.

Garrity spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s PJ Leddy.

Division 4 is divided into two groups:

Group A: Antrim, Fermanagh, London Carlow

Group B: Leitrim, Derry, Kilkenny, Limerick, Wicklow.

The top two teams from each group will qualify for the league semi-finals.

Sunday’s Division 4 – Group B results
Leitrim 5-15 Derry 1-2
Kilkenny 0-2 Limerick 4-13
