Four wards at Sligo University Hospital now impacted by outbreaks of Covid or flu

Four wards at Sligo University Hospital are now impacted by outbreaks of Covid of flu.

In an update this evening, the hospital is also reminding people to contact, GPs or GP Out of Hours Services for those whose health problem is not of an emergency nature.

Sligo University Hospital, like hospitals right around the country, is experiencing significantly high levels of activity with large numbers of people presenting to the Emergency Departments.

Many of those attending need to be admitted for ongoing treatment which is leading to pressure on bed availability.

The high levels of flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses are also impacting on bed capacity across the hospital.

These ongoing pressures are resulting in significant delays being experienced by patients in the ED who are waiting for a bed to become available on a ward.

The hospital is treating 24 patients with COVID-19, 19 patients with flu and is managing four outbreak wards.

Visiting to outbreak wards is limited to compassionate grounds only, and people are being asked to contact the ward manager in advance.

Given the pressures on the hospital, management are appealing to the public that visiting times to all other wards is 6-8pm. Also, they’re also reminding to public not to visit the hospital if you have any symptoms of flu or COVID-19 or feel unwell.
