Updated: Sligo councillor calls for new ‘HSE winter plan’ to target overcrowding in emergency departments’

A Sligo Councillor is calling for the new HSE winter plan to target overcrowding  in Hospital Emergency Departments as a matter of urgency.

Hundreds of new healthcare staff are to be recruited in the coming months under the HSE’s Winter Plan, which goes to Cabinet today.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has requested an ‘all hands on deck’ approach for the health service this winter.

There have already been concerns raised over the levels of inadequate staffing levels at many hospitals across the country including those based in the north west.

For the first time the plan, which is costed at 168 million euro, contains bespoke, site-level programmes for individual hospitals.

It’ll see the hiring of 51 emergency department consultants and additional supports for GPs, community intervention teams and local injury units to reduce pressure on emergency departments.

Sligo Drumcliff Municipal District Councillor and member of the North West Health forum, Donal Gilroy says the new plan will need to alleviate the pressure on Health Departments.
