Leitrim GP warns the lack of options to treat patients with long covid is a major concern

With over 18,000 people across the counties of Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal currently being diagnosed with long covid a Leitrim GP has backed calls for more resources including establishing specialised treatment centres in the north west where patients with the condition can be referred to.

With many people presenting at hospitals with the condition there is extra pressure on the health service and it’s feared that this will escalate in the months ahead.

A recent breakdown of long Covid figures show that there were 12,093 cases recorded in Donegal, 4,204 in Sligo and 2,075 in Leitrim.

Drumshanbo based GP Alan Loftus currently there little options where GP’s can refer patients with long Covid to.

He says GP’s are very concerned that the winter ahead will be very challenging for those working in healthcare.
