Concerns raised in Dáil over the standard of cancer treatment in region

A Sligo Leitrim TD has raised concerns in relation to the level of services being provided to the Saolta Hospital Group at the Cancer Centre of Excellence in Galway.

Deputy Marc MacSharry spoke on the matter in Dáil after attending a presentation along with other TDs from Professor Michael Kerins Director of the Cancer Network in the Saolta University Hospital Group.

Professor Kerins informed TD’s that the centre of excellence in Galway is chronically under resourced in terms of the required infrastructure which in turn is undermining the treatment being provided to patients.

He say Urgent investment is required both within the centre of excellence for surgery in Galway and also at a number of Regional centres including those at Sligo University Hospital and Letterkenny University Hospital.

Deputy MacSharry rose the matter in the Dáil yesterday with Minister Eamon Ryan where he expressed his disappointment with a response he had received by email on the matter.
