Ballymote Community shocked by tragic accident



There’s widespread shock throughout the Ballymote area of Sligo today following the death of two people that lived locally in a fatal road traffic collision.

The fatal collision took place on the R293 between Ballaghadereen and Gorteen this morning.

 

The man and woman lost their lives in the single vehicle collision. Which is believed to have taken place at approximately 3.30 am this morning at Edmonstown road.

 

A third person traveling in the car a man in his 20s, is being treated for his injuries in Castlebar General Hospital.   His injuries are believed to be non-life treating.

 

Emergency Services and Gardaí attended the scene and treated the occupants of the vehicle.

One of the occupants a man in his 20’s was pronounced dead at the scene. The second, a female in her 30s, was removed by Ambulance to Castlebar Hospital where she later died.

It’s under the deceased were living in the Ballymote area of Sligo.

The crash site remains closed for a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

 

Fr James McDonagh is the Parish Priest in Ballymote he says the news of the accident has shocked the entire community of Ballymote:

 

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R293 at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
