Sligo’s Aoife McDermott makes Ireland Six Nations squad

Sligo’s Aoife McDermott has been included in a 38-strong squad named by new Ireland women’s head coach Greg McWilliams for the forthcoming TikTok Six Nations Championship.

The Riverstown lock, who just last weekend helped her club Railway Union lift the All-Ireland Division 1 title, makes the cut for the 2022 Six Nations, which will begin for Ireland on Saturday, March 26th, against Wales at the RDS.

One notable omission from the squad is IT Sligo graduate Cliodhna Moloney.

Wasps hooker Moloney played in all eight Ireland games in 2021, but made headlines last November when she described comments made by women’s director Anthony Eddy as ‘slurry spreading’.

Coincidently, Eddy stepped down from his role as the IRFU’s Director of Sevens and Women’s Rugby on Thursday.

His departure comes the day before a report on Ireland’s failure to qualify for the Women’s World Cup is due to be published.

As for the remainder of the Ireland Six Nations squad, there are nine uncapped players named with forwards Christy Haney, Amanda McQuade, Anna McGann, Aoife Wafer, Emma Murphy and backs Aoibheann Reilly, Natasja Behan, Molly Scuffil-McCabe and Vicky Irwin all impressing McWilliams with their recent form in club rugby.
