Local people in west Sligo disgusted and horrified by attack on their 73-year old neighbour

Gardai say they are continuing to investigate all circumstances surrounding the vicious attack three weeks ago on a 73-year old west Sligo man who’s now on life support in Sligo University Hospital.

At 7 o’clock on the evening of Tuesday, 18th January, three masked men forced their way into the home of Tom Niland, along the N59 Ballisodare to Ballina road at Doonflin, Skreen, after he answered a knock on his door.

He had been watching television alone in his home when the culprits had reversed their car into his driveway.

Sligo-based Garda Superintendent Mandy Gaynor says there ARE people who know who carried out this attack, and she appealed for them to come forward with their information.

She said Tom Niland and his family deserve to have the criminals who carried out ‘this heartless act’ brought to justice.

She also said people in the west Sligo area are disgusted and horrified that this happened to a gentleman who had been living peacefully in his own home.

A west Sligo councillor says the attack on Tom Niland has left people living alone in shock.

Independent Councillor Michael Clarke says what happened has sent shockwaves throughout the community.

In additon to the latest appeal from Sligo Garda Superintendent Mandy Gaynor, the Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council is also urging anyone with information to come forward.

Fianna Fail Councillor Paul Taylor asked on the North West Today Show how anyone could inflict such injuries on an elderly gentleman in the community.
