Donegal flood relief needs to be progressed says Donegal TD

A Donegal TD says the proposed €8.5m flood defence for the North West River Basin in Donegal Town needs to be progressed quicker.

The proposed development consists of flood water storage, embankments and walls to protect around 73 buildings with the funding coming from the government’s €1.3b Flood Risk Management scheme.

This and other projects like it fall under the National Development Plan with an end date of 2030.

Sinn Fein TD, Pearse Doherty says residents are ‘living in fear’ of the next major storm and cannot wait, potentially, until the end of the decade for the works to be complete.

Minister of State with the Responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Patrick O’Donovan is to visit Co. Donegal in the coming weeks to review flood defences around the county.

Minister O’Donovan acknowledged that some projects are being delayed for numerous reasons and says they are investigating to see if any can be brought forward.
