Leitrim make changes to senior club football championship

Leitrim GAA has voted to change the structure of its 2022 senior and intermediate club football championships.

County Board delegates passed an amended motion from Aughnasheelin GAA club at a meeting on Wednesday night.

The motion had been held over from Monday night’s online Annual Convention.

It means the 2022 senior championship will no longer have two groups of five teams contesting the round robin stages.

Instead, the 10 teams will be in one single group – and each club will play four round-robin matches.

Those fixtures will be determined by an open draw.

After the four rounds of group games, the top two teams will qualify directly for county semi-finals.

The next four best-placed sides will contest two quarter-finals.

The relegation play-off is also changing with the bottom four teams in the group stage facing a relegation semi-final.

The eventual loser of the relegation final will make the drop to intermediate football in 2023.

This new format will also be adopted for the Smith Monumentals intermediate football championship in 2022.
