St Eunans win Donegal U21football title in special club year

A memorable 2021 for St Eunan’s of Letterkenny continued on Sunday when the club’s under-21 footballers secured Donegal ‘A’ football championship title with a 1-3 to 1-9 victory against a gallant MacCumhaill’s at O’Donnell Park.

A strong final quarter proved key as they overturned a two-point deficit to win by four in the end with Shane O’Donnell collecting the Man of the Match award.

Eunan’s, who successfully tossed for home advantage in the final at the beginning of the week,  had beaten Four Masters of Donegal Town by 1-13 to 1-5 but they were pushed hard for much of the hour by their Ballybofey opponents in this final.

MacCumhaill’s led by 1-6 to 0-7 at the interval, helped by Kevin McCormack’s early goal.

But Eunan’s upped the ante after the restart and were level by the time the second-half water break was called.

MacCumhaill’s were reduced to 14 players following Chad McSorley’s red card.

The sides were still level with four minutes remaining – but then Eunan’s struck for a goal through Shane O’Donnell.

This proved to the key score as a black card for Luke Gavigan then reduced MacCumhaill’s to 13 players.

Peter McEniff kicked the insurance score to secure another county title for the Cathedral town club.

This is is a fifth county title for the Eunan’s club in 2021 – their other successes this year include the senior men’s football and hurling championships.
