Fresh calls for new inquest into death of Pettigo man Michael Leonard

There are renewed calls for justice for the family of a Donegal man shot dead by the RUC almost 50 years ago.

It follows a meeting with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs last Friday.

Twenty-four years old Michael Leonard was killed 200 metres from the border after a car chase between Pettigo and Belleek on May 17th 1973.

There have been continuing calls for a new inquest into his death.

It’s claimed new evidence which the family presented in 2019 proves that Michael Leonard was not killed accidentally with a single shot as the RUC alleged but that he was deliberately targeted and shot at multiple times by police before he could reach the border and his home in Pettigo.

Last Friday, Michael Leonard’s family had an hour-long meeting with officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Among those at the meeting were Michael Leonard’s cousin Fr Joe McVeigh, family solicitor Adrian O’Kane from Pat Fahy Solicitors, Ciaran MacAirt from the charity Paper Trail, and Donegal County Councillor Michael Naughton.

Cllr Naughton said Michael Leonard’s parents went to their graves without truth or justice for their son.
