Harkin’s Bill proposes credit unions be allowed provide more services

A Sligo/Leitrim TD has introduced a Bill in the Dail proposing that credit unions be allowed provide more modern-day financial services.

It coincides with World Credit Union Day, which is today.

Speaking in the Dail, Independent Marian Harkin said any greater range of financial services would be for the mutual benefit of the credit union and its members.

She also stressed the importance of protecting the community and volunteer ethos of credit unions which, she pointed out, are member owned, not-for-profit.

Deputy Harkin outlined why there is a need for her bill.
