Leitrim councillor fears ban on smokey fuel will lead to fuel poverty

A Leitrim councillor fears an increase in fuel prices and next year’s ban on smokey fuel nationwide will put more people into financial difficulty.

Sinn Fein Councillor Padraig Fallon says protecting the enviroment is vital but measures need to be in place to help people.

A recent report from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) claims increases in fuel prices for residential heating due to a carbon tax will raise the number of people in fuel poverty.

Councillor Fallon says while he accepts the health benefits of introducing policies such as a carbon tax, there are also many negative health affects from those experiencing fuel poverty.
