Sligo suffer heavy Wexford defeat

Sligo gaelic footballers were outplayed by Wexford in Sunday’s Division 4 league shield final, on a final scoreline of 2-15 to 0-9.

The result marked Wexford first competitive win of 2021 as they bossed the game for most of the 70 minutes to lift the inaugural Division 4 Shield title.

Tony McEntee gave Knockmore’s Peter Naughton his first start of the campaign. Naughton, whose father Declan is from Castleconnor, top-scored for Knockmore when they won last year’s Mayo senior football championship.

However, it was Wexford who took charge of most sectors on field and there was a worrying looking injury to Sligo captain Keelan Cawley too. The Coolera/Strandhill club man was forced to come off with a suspected concussion.

Wexford led 1-7 to 0-4 at half-time, but the expected second-half revival from the Yeats County never materialised.

Just four Sligo players managed to get on the scoresheet all afternoon.

Sligo manager Tony McEntee pulled no punches when he spoke to reporter Gavin Cawley after the game.
