Households in the north west encouraged to recycle batteries

Householders in counties Donegal and Sligo recycled 35,000 fewer batteries last year compared to 2019.

But those in Leitrim strongly bucked the trend, recycling 26,000 more batteries.

The just-released figures are from WEEE Ireland for batteries recycled through retailers, such as supermarkets, hardware outlets and electronic stores.

Sligo recycled 5,000 fewer batteries while the figure for Donegal was 30,000 fewer.

When it came to the actual number of batteries recycled last year in each county, Sligo came out worst in the north west.

The figures were was 221,000 for Donegal, 77,000 for Leitrim and 64,000 for Sligo.

The CEO of WEEE Ireland, Leo Donovan, says that for every battery recycled, WEEE Ireland makes a contribution toward the Laura Lynn charity.
