Up to 200 houses in Sligo affected by pyrite

There are fears that more houses than originally thought in County Sligo may be affected by pyrite and mica.

The presence of the minerals in building blocks can cause cracking as well as crumbling in what has been called ‘the Weetabix effect’.

The issue has been a concern for some time in Donegal and Mayo but it’s now also emerging as a problem in County Sligo.

West Sligo Councillor Michael Clarke has been telling Ocean FM News how an increasing number of cases are coming to light in Sligo.

Cllr Clarke outlines how the problem manifests itself.

And he says that for homeowners affected, a scheme that is in place does not cover all of the major costs involved.
