Concern over availability of animal medicines

Renewed calls are being made on the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue to resolve the ongoing issue of prescribing animal doses and medicines.

It’s as the new EU Veterinary Medicines Regulation comes into force next year.

Effectively, the changes will result in prescriptions that were heretofore available over the counter in chemists and animal supplies shops now becoming prescription only and, in many cases, only available for purchase from a vet’s practice.

Brendan Barry, chairman of the Beef Plan movement, says if the proposed new measures are introduced, they will add significant cost to the prices farmers are paying for animal medications.
