Swimmers, kayakers praised for Rosses Point rescue

A number of swimmers and kayakers are being praised today for their help in rescuing a swimmer who got into difficulty in the sea at Rosses Point yesterday evening.

The swimmer was off the first beach at the resort, and was subsequently taken to Sligo University Hospital where he is recovering.

The water in the area at the time was challenging and choppy with a strong pull.

A number of swimmers from the ‘Swimming with Sheila’ school spotted the man, resulting in kayakers who were on the second beach being sent to rescue him, with Sligo Bay Lifeboat personnel also arriving quickly on the scene.

Sheila Ryan from the Swimming with Sheila school, said it was ‘a very close call’ and without quick thinking there could have been a different outcome.
