Enniscrone unable to hold plebiscite on renaming as the town is not in a Gaeltacht area

Plans to hold a plebiscite on the renaming of Enniscrone are on hold as they are in a non Gaeltacht area.

Fine Gael Senator and general election candidate, Frank Feighan, raised the issue in the Seanad recently with Minister of State for Local Government and Electoral Reform, John Paul Phelan.

He is calling on the government to change the Local Government Act to allow locals residents to hold a plebiscite on renaming their area, even if they are outside a Gaeltacht area.

Speaking earlier to Ocean FM news, Senator Feighan says there seems to be an unintended conflict between the respective departments.
