Plans to settle refugees in Donegal Town area

Donegal County Council has confirmed that there are plans to settle refugees in the Donegal Town area.

However, it says details have not been confirmed.

Donegal County Council says the Irish Refugee Protection Programme and the Department of Justice and Equality continues to engage with it in relation to the resettlement of refugee families.

Tto date, families have been resettled in Carndonagh, Ballybofey/Stranorlar, Letterkenny and Buncrana.

Now, there are plans to resettle families in the Donegal Town area; however details have not yet been confirmed.

The Refugee Protection Programme is designed to offer protection to persons fleeing their country of origin and seeking protection in another country.

Services to them are to be provided after arrival by what’s described as ‘mainstream public service providers’, in cooperation with national and local non-government organisations and the community and voluntary sector.

Donegal County Council says the local Resettlement Inter-Agency Steering Group — comprised of representatives from relevant public service providers — has been working with the Irish Refugee Protection Programme to oversee the local resettlement and integration programme in Donegal.

The county council has acknowledged the support provided by all organisations and agencies involved in this process — and especially the positive community response received to date.

The council says the aim is to continue to support each of these families in their resettlement.

It asks that these families are given the time and space to allow them to settle into their new life in Donegal.
