Concern among farmers over ‘Fair Deal Scheme’

A Sligo/Leitrim TD says there is huge concern among elderly farmers and their families who fear part or all of their farms may eventually have to be sold to enable nursing home bills be paid.

Farmers on the Fair Deal Scheme who spend a lengthy period in nursing homes have to pay 7.5% contribution charge on their assets.

There are proposals to cap farmers contributions under the scheme at three years if a family member continued to work the farm– but this has not yet been brought in.

Fianna Fail Deputy Eamon Scanlon says the delay is causing concern for farmers’ families while some elderly farmers may not get the care they need.
