Two elderly people airlifted to hospital after suffering head injuries at Strandhill Beach

Two people were airlifted to hospital yesterday evening.

The alarm was raised at 4:16pm at Strandhill Beach after an elderly man and woman slipped on rocks along the southern end where they suffered head injuries.

One was more serious and had to be attached to a stretcher before both were airlifted to the airport and then transported by ambulance to Sligo University Hospital.

The area in which it occurred was inaccessible for an ambulance and with the rising tide, emergency services decided the best course of action was to call Sligo Rescue Helicopter 118 to the scene.

The condition of the people is unknown at this time
