Cllr Healy: Decision to close St Mary’s College ultimately lies with education minister

A Sligo councillor says it’s the Minister for Education and his department who will ultimately decide the future of St Mary’s College in Ballisodare.

Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas Healy says that’s because departmental funding will be needed to keep the secondary school open.

The trustees of the college — the Catholic Education Irish Schools Trust — have decided to close the school in 2022.

But Cllr Healy says the local community wants to be given adequate time to raise pupil numbers so as to keep the school from closing.
