Further call to be made on Education Minister to keep St Mary’s College open

Education Minister and Donegal TD Joe McHugh will be called on again today to ensure St Mary’s College in Ballisodare does not close.

At this morning’s meeting of Sligo County Council, Independent Councillor Marie Casserly will propose that the council write to the minister asking him not to accept the recommendations of the school trustees to close the college.

Those trustees, the Catholic Education Irish Schools Trust, wants to shut the school in two years time because of falling pupil numbers.

But a strong campaign is underway to prevent the closure, with Cllr Casserly, who is also a teacher at the school, having spoken to Minister McHugh about it during his recent visit to Drumshanbo.

She told Ocean FM News about her motion on today’s council agenda.
