Is climate change now affecting the salmon fishing season?

There are claims climate change could be affecting the fishing seasons after the first salmon of the year was caught in the River Drowes only yesterday.

The angler who landed the salmon – which was released again – was Jackie McErlean from Belfast.

Mr McErlean was given a prize of kilo of silver worth €750 to celebrate the International Year of the Salmon 2019.

In 2018, the first salmon of the year in the country was recorded in the river on the 30th of January.

Shane Gallagher of Drowes Salmon Fisheries says this is the latest on record that the first salmon of the year was netted on the river.
