Motorist advised to drive with extreme caution after heavy snowfalls



Motorist across the north west are advised to drive with extreme caution this morning after heavy snowfalls overnight.

Four to six inches of snow is reported on some roads with conditions expected to be hazardous throughout the region this morning, including on roads that have already been treated.

Sligo County Council is asking motorist to drive only if necessary and to allow extra time for your journey.

Meanwhile south bound lane of the inner relief road has been reopened to traffic following an earlier accident at Summerhill College.

The local authority has been clearing the N4 dual carriage way with a snow plough this morning and gritting is also taking place.

Gallowshill in Sligo is also reported to be extremely slippy and a jeep has overturned in Ballintrillick.

Gardai report snowy and icy conditions at the Windy Gap, between Bonniconlon and Lough Talt on the Ballina to Tubbercurry Road.

Motorists in Leitrim are advised there is also heavy snow fall reported on the Carrick-on-Shannon to Killashandra at Aughavas and there was a truck stuck on the bridge in Carrick on Shannon earlier this morning.

Senior Engineer with Sligo County Council Tom Brennan says they will continue to asses the situation throughout the day.

 

Meanwhile Senior Engineer with Leitirim County Council Shay Brennan says is warning that local roads are extremely dangerous this morning.
