Sligo Councillor calls for legislation to deal with unregistered scrap metal dealers

A north Sligo Councillor is calling for legislation to deal with scrap metal dealers who are not registered with local authorities.

It follows the recent theft of the Yeats-related ‘crouched figure’ statue from Drumcliffe, in north Sligo.

Sligo County Council Director of Services Tom Kilfeather says there is sufficient legislation and regulations in place for scrap metal dealers who are authorised and registered, with records having to be kept.

He added that local authorities are responsible for issuing permits, but that it was in dealing with those who were not registered where the problem lay.

At this week’s meeting of Sligo County Council, Cllr Casserly agreed to withdraw her motion for further discussion on its wording.

But she insists there’s a need not only to track money that’s paid for scrap metal but also that there should be a waiting period before the metal can be melted down.
