The direct provision centre in Sligo is close to capacity according to figures released by the Department of Justice.
Globe House, which has a capacity for 218 people, is currently housing 212 occupants.
The Reception and Integration Agency said last month that it was preparing to open three new direct provision centres; one of which is located in Donegal and another on the Leitrim/Roscommon border.
Five of the 38 direct provision centres throughout the country are oversubscribed.
A total of 5,928 women, men and children were living in direct provision centres at the end of last week.
