Sligo Traveller group says census figures don’t tally



The Sligo Traveller Support Group says the Census figures don’t always reflect the reality in local communities.

Figures released last week show that the Traveller population in the North West is declining with over 200 fewer members of the community living here compared to in 2011.

However, Bernadette Maughan of the Sligo traveller Support Group says the surveys they carry out locally each year don’t tally.

Their figures show an increase and she says that’s mainly down to the fact that many travellers don’t fill out the Census:
