Site for new Regional Garda HQ in Sligo should be known in coming weeks

A government minister says the site for a new Garda regional headquarters in Sligo should be known in the next three to four weeks.

Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, the Minister of State who has responsibility for the Office of Public Works which provides garda station buildings, says three possible sites have now been identified in Sligo.

The unsuitability of Sligo Garda Station for the gardai who work there has been an ongoing issue for years, particularly because of the increasing number of gardai based in the building.

There’s also a lack of other facilities such as parking and cells for holding prisoners.

Gardai threatened to walk out last October after the current station building was found not fit for purpose.

It was described as a fire trap, a health and safety hazard and too small for the current workforce.

However, no progress could be made on resolving the situation until a site for a new station was pinpointed.

But speaking to Ocean FM News during a visit to Sligo, Minister Moran says the wait is now near an end:

In the meantime, another Garda move is already happening in Sligo.

Some gardai will move to a temporary base in Finisklin, from where they will work until the new station is finished.

Minister Moran says that move should take place very soon:
