National record for Christopher O’Donnell at U20 European Championships



Christopher O’Donnell ran a new national junior record at the European U20 Athletics Championship in Italy at the weekend.

The North Sligo Athletic Club member from Grange ran 46.54 seconds in the 400 metres final to finish sixth overall, having come through two heats.

There were also a number of successes for Donegal and Leitrim runners at the National Championships in Santry over the weekend.

Leitrim’s Eanna Madden won the 200m and finished second in the 100m, while Gerard O’Donnell won the 100m hurdles.

Donegal’s Mark English won the 800m, with Karl Griffin third, while Kate McGowan finished third in the 400m hurdles, Ann-Marie McGlynn was second in the 5000m, Caolan O’Callaghan was fourth in the triple jump and John Kelly won the shot putt.

Sligo’s Colm Bourke was second in the long jump, while Emmet Dunleavy was fourth in the 5000m and Orlaith Delahunt was fourth in the women’s 5K Walk.

And Finn Valley AC’s Sommer Lecky claimed gold in the girls high jump at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Bahamas yesterday.
