Clancy misses out on bronze at European Championships

There was disappointment for Sligo boxer Dean Clancy in his bronze medal fight at the European Boxing Championships in Belgrade this week.

Clancy, who’s Olympic-qualified, lost out to Azerbaijan’s Malik Hasanov in their light welterweight quarter-final bout on Wednesday 5-0.

After an even enough opening round, Hasanov took control of the contest, and had Clancy down in all three rounds.

While one judge gave the final round to Clancy, Hasanov came away with the bronze medal and $5,000 in prize money.

Clancy, who’s based out of the Sean McDermott boxing Gym in Manorhamilton, will now continue his preparations for this summer’s Paris Olympics.
