Manorhamilton faces the festive season without lights

Many Christmas Lights in the north west will be turned on over the weekend but one town in north Leitrim is facing into the festive season without them.

Manorhamilton in county Leitrim faces its first Christmas without lights.

It appears the cost of funding Christmas lights is a concern for many towns and villages, though, with communities going to great lengths each year to raise and secure funding.

In Leitrim, Ocean FM News understands that the lights in Manorhamilton are old and simply no longer fit for purpose and they cannot use them.

However, spokespeople for the community and businesses in the town say they are working to have a brand new set of lights for next year.

In Donegal, The cost of putting up Christmas lights in Donegal town is more than the local community chamber can afford.

Chamber member and local businessman Ernan McGettigan confirmed that last year it cost the town 19 thousand euro but they were only able to raise a revenue of 14 thousand.

The difference then had to be taken from the funding of other events in the town such as the food festival.

He confirmed they do receive six thousand euro from Donegal county council but it is still not enough to cover the costs.

The lights will be turned on in Donegal town on Sunday at 7pm following the taste of Christmas festival but Mr. McGettigan says getting the lights up is a worry for the chamber group every year.

The lights in Sligo town, however, will be turned on this evening at half five when olympic gold medal winners Margaret Carr and Thomas Connolly will flick the switch.

The Town will see more Christmas lights this year than ever before according to the group in charge.

The Sligo Business Improvement District (BID) has this year taken over the care of the Christmas lights and decorations in the county town.
